Wildcats are quick study at AHA Thanksgiving tournament
ere will be times whern a team needs to learn some small lessons. In order to succeed, the team needs to be able to apply those lessons quickly and use that knowledge moving forward.
For the Dodge County girls hockey team, its first lesson came at the Academy of Holy Angels Thanksgiving tournament in Richfield, where the team fell to Benilde-St. Margarets on Friday night, but rebounded to defeat Holy Angels on Saturday.
The first stage of this lesson occurred in Friday night’s game. While the Wildcats skated evenly with the Knights throughout the first period and early part of the second, Dodge County found themselves trailing 2-0.
“We gave up a couple goals on defensive zone face-offs,” Dodge County Head Coach Jeremy Gunderson explained. “That’s something we work on all the time and it’s a situation where we have some returning players that were standing around that allowed [the Knights] to gain some opportunities.”
As the game progressed, the Wildcats continued to get sloppier. Four goals from Sydney Simone proceeded to bury Dodge County in a deep hole and Gunderson opted to play some of his younger players to send a message to his team in what turned out to be a 5-0 loss.
