KoMets get key win over Osseo
The Kasson-Mantorville softball team is looking to establish themselves early this season. Even though their week started with a loss to Zumbrota-Mazeppa, the KoMets were able to do that by defeating Lake City and picking up a big win over Osseo to improve to 4-1 on the year.
The week started with a trip to Zumbrota-Mazeppa to face the Cougars on April 11. In what could be called their biggest rivalry, the scoreboard didn’t reflect that through the first six innings as K-M found themselves down 9-0 coming into the seventh.
It was there that the KoMets’ bats would start to come to life as they would plate seven runs in the inning including a three-run home run by Kendra Powers to get K-M within striking distance. Despite the valiant effort at the end of the game, the KoMets would drop their first game of the season by a score of 9-7.
“We just didn’t make enough plays defensively to give our comeback a chance,” K-M softball coach Paul Mann observed. “We got roughed up for about six innings, but to the girls’ credit, they didn’t give up and were almost rewarded for it.”
After taking one on the chin in Zumbrota, the KoMets would host Lake City in a HVL matchup on April 14. This would be where K-M would get back to its trademark brand of softball as the Tigers were overmatched by pitcher Chante Thome. The senior twirled a perfect game against the Tigers with 10 strikeouts while contributing at the plate with four runs batted in as part of a 10-0 victory.
“Chante continues to get stronger with each day,” Mann said of the performance. “It was a great way for her to come back after a difficult game against Z-M.”
