Cobras off to strong start with Triton Invitational title
The Triton boys basketball team is looking to establish some momentum early in the year and there are few better ways of doing that than throwing your own invitational tournament.
With the Cobras picking up a pair of victories in a tournament that included Blooming Prairie, Kenyon-Wanamingo and Schaeffer Academy, it could be a step in the right direction for a young team trying to find their way.
“We stuck to our gameplan in both games and executed,” First-year head coach Zak Hanegraaf explained. “Our seniors lead us in both games and that will have to happen all year for us to be successful.”
The opener for the Cobras was a rout as Triton jumped on Schaeffer Academy from the opening tipoff en route to a 68-45 victory. Isaiah Wannarka had a double-double for the Cobras mixing 17 points with 11 rebounds and fellow senior Garrett Dahms had a double-double of his own with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cobras also played well as a team against the Lions with ten of the eleven players on the roster recording a point. They also were able to dominate the glass with a 53-30 edge in rebounding.
Despite the lopsided final result, Triton still had some kinks to work out such as their free throw shooting (where they went 11-22 from the charity stripe) and taking care of the basketball after 14 turnovers.
