Best hospital ranking put Mayo at top

Rochester facility still No. 1 in nation

It probably comes as no suprise to must. Health care is top-notch in Minnesota, especially in our corner of southeastern Minnesota. Of course, it doesn’t hurt having the mecca of health facilities right down the road just minutes away in Rochester.

Mayo Clinic has once again been rated as America’s best hospital, in annual rankings by U.S. News and World Report. Mayo earned the coveted top spot for the second straight year and third in four years.

The Rochester campus received the number one overall ranking in the magazine’s Honor Roll of Best Hospitals, based on performance in 16 different areas of specialty care.

Cleveland Clinic and John Hopkins in Baltimore rated second and third on the Honor Roll list.

In addition to being ranked number one overall, Mayo also received top ratings in six specialty areas including diabetes, GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology and neurosurgery.

"The key is this is all about the patients," Mayo Clinic president and CEO John Noseworthy said. "We have the best staff in the world. We take this very seriously, and we're not going to rest on our achievements."

“Mayo Clinic is consistently top ranked nationwide more often than any other hospital because of the thousands of people here who shared a vision,” he said.

Mayo says its hospitals see more than 1.3 million patients every year.

In addition to Rochester medical facilities, there are Mayo clinics on the landscape all across southern Minnesota, including Kasson. Fortunately, I have never needed significant health care for myself or any other close family members. I have been blessed with good health and hope to keep it that way.

But it is reassuring to know that quality medical care is close by if things suddenly change.

Our lives are often bombarded with negative news. It’s reassuring to see something positive happening around us, especially such a high ranking as what Mayo has achieved.

Top-notch health care is one of the reasons our quality of living in Minnesota is as strong as it is.

What’s more, Mayo has been rated eighth on Forbes list of America’s best employers. Mayo is attracting the best doctors and nurses in the world to make it the best hospital in the country.

Being in hot pursuit of quality health care is made easier for all of us by the Mayo Clinic.
