Mark Westphal, 56, Kasson

Mark Douglas Westphal, 56, of Kasson passed away unexpectedly on July 5, 2018. 

He was born in Austin on Dec. 12, 1961. He graduated from Kasson-Mantorville High School in 1980 and married his high-school sweetheart, Sara, on March 26, 1983. They shared three children and spent 35 happy years together. 

After high school, Mark was in the Air Force Reserves for six years. Mark and Sara moved to Roseau, Minn. in 1993. Mark was employed by Polaris as a designer, and often said it was his dream job. Besides his job at Polaris, Mark was a volunteer firefighter and radio DJ. He and his family moved back to Kasson in 2002. Upon moving to Kasson, Mark was employed by National Oilwell Varco in St. Paul. He spent the last year working for Bosch in Owatonna.

Mark enjoyed being a hands-on worker for his friends and family. In his younger years, he enjoyed racing stock cars and demolition derby’s. In the summer months, he loved being outdoors and boating at the family camper on Lake Tetonka and trips to the Boundary Waters. During the winter, he loved snowmobiling and visiting his daughter, Krysta, and friends in Warroad. 

His recent proud moment was becoming a grandfather to Naomi Johnson, who he loved dearly. Mark was known for being a dependable and helpful friend who always had a story to tell. 

Mark is survived by his wife Sara Westphal, daughter Krysta (Tyler) Johnson (26), granddaughter Naomi Johnson (10 months), daughter Lauren (19), parents Eugene and Janice Westphal, sister Deb (Jeff) Meyer, brother Terry (Carol) Westphal, brother Chris (Jessica) Westphal, and many nieces and nephews. 

Mark was preceded in death by his son Nathan Westphal, father-in-law William Ostroot, grandparents Paul and Carolynn Westphal, and grandparents Ben and Phyllis Eblen.

The funeral service was held at Community Celebration Church in Kasson on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. Burial and luncheon followed the service.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for their distribution per their wishes.
