Lucille Boyum, 94, Kasson

Lucille Boyum, 94, died Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Prairie Meadows Senior Living in Kasson.

Lucille Arlene Megrund was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Shelly, Minnesota, to Henry and Leafie (Johnson) Megrund. The third of five children, Lucille grew up in Shelly, where her father was the postmaster and her mother was a homemaker. She was baptized and confirmed at Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly, where her grandfather Anders Megrund was the founding pastor.

After graduating from Climax High School in 1942, Lucille’s first job was as a clerk in Hartz Grocery Store in Shelly. In 1943, Lucille moved to Minneapolis and worked for Honeywell as an inventory clerk. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Dependable Motors in Minneapolis.
In August 1946, she suffered an illness that was misdiagnosed as polio, and she returned home to live with her parents. It was later determined that she was stricken with a brain aneurysm. In 1949, Lucille underwent surgery at Mayo Clinic to prevent another hemorrhage. She attended Rochester Junior College from 1950 to 1951, where she earned an associate’s degree. In 1954, Lucille was introduced to Elmer Boyum, a farmer from Kasson, through her aunt. She married Elmer on March 4, 1955, at the South Zumbro parsonage. She stayed at home to raise her family and assisted her husband on the family dairy farm. Elmer retired from farming in 1974. Two years later, the couple moved into Kasson. Lucille moved to Prairie Meadows in September 2011, which was her home for the rest of her life. Elmer died Jan. 19, 2015.
A member of South Zumbro Lutheran Church, Lucille was active in its women’s ministries. A renowned baker, she was a regional champion of the Pillsbury Bake-Off. She enjoyed her family, particularly playing board games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
