Lucille Boyum, 94, Kasson
Lucille Boyum, 94, died Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Prairie Meadows Senior Living in Kasson.
Lucille Arlene Megrund was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Shelly, Minnesota, to Henry and Leafie (Johnson) Megrund. The third of five children, Lucille grew up in Shelly, where her father was the postmaster and her mother was a homemaker. She was baptized and confirmed at Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly, where her grandfather Anders Megrund was the founding pastor.
After graduating from Climax High School in 1942, Lucille’s first job was as a clerk in Hartz Grocery Store in Shelly. In 1943, Lucille moved to Minneapolis and worked for Honeywell as an inventory clerk. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Dependable Motors in Minneapolis.
In August 1946, she suffered an illness that was misdiagnosed as polio, and she returned home to live with her parents. It was later determined that she was stricken with a brain aneurysm. In 1949, Lucille underwent surgery at Mayo Clinic to prevent another hemorrhage. She attended Rochester Junior College from 1950 to 1951, where she earned an associate’s degree. After graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper for Gopher Aviation at Rochester Airport.
In 1954, Lucille was introduced to Elmer Boyum, a farmer from Kasson, through her aunt. She married Elmer on March 4, 1955, at the South Zumbro parsonage. She stayed at home to raise her family and assisted her husband on the family dairy farm. Elmer retired from farming in 1974. Two years later, the couple moved into Kasson. Lucille moved to Prairie Meadows in September 2011, which was her home for the rest of her life. Elmer died Jan. 19, 2015.
A member of South Zumbro Lutheran Church, Lucille was active in its women’s ministries. A renowned baker, she was a regional champion of the Pillsbury Bake-Off. She enjoyed her family, particularly playing board games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lucille is survived by two sons, Thomas (Gail) of Bloomington, and Dwight (Judy) of Rochester; two stepsons, Kendall (Julie) of Hayfield and Norlyn of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Carol (Ron) Rick of Dixon, Ill.; grandchildren Jaymie Boyum, Christine Frankowski, Chuck Boyum, Robin Smith, Jodi Rick, Bill Rick, Jennifer Dewey, Susan Powers, Patrick Boyum, Karine Greene, Audrin Place, Tanya Gregg, Tasha Raymo, Seth Boyum, Grace Boyum and Faith Boyum; great-grandchildren Sadie Rabun, Zachary Rabun, Ann Marie Frankowski, Emily Smith, Erica Smith, Erin Smith, A.J. Murdock, Owen Rick, Olivia Rick, Ethan Rick, Marissa Grant, Andra Morales Reyes, Kamiah Adams, Paige Greene, Kennedy Greene, Katie Powers, Nyah Gregg, Brayden Raymo and Kaylee Raymo; two great-great granddaughters, Brielle Boyum-Henrichs and Everly Grant; and one great-great grandson, Bradley Beal II.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; granddaughter Heidi Rick; great-granddaughter Natalie Gregg; sister Lorraine, brothers Adrian, Wesley and Harris.
A memorial service was held Monday, April 22, at South Zumbro Lutheran Church with the Rev. Eldon Simonson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Croix Hospice or South Zumbro Lutheran Church.
