Donald Ervin Boyum, 93, Deer River
Donald Ervin Boyum was born in Canisteo Township, on May 31, 1925, to Clara (Alrick) and Anthony Boyum. Don grew up on the farm in rural Kasson. After high school, Don served for a short time in the Navy doing basic training in Idaho. After a medical discharge he returned to rural Kasson.
Don worked at the Rochester Dairy where he met his wife of 62 1/2 years, Dorothy House. They were married on June 29, 1946. After the dairy, in 1951, Don began working in Rochester at Crenlo. He was one of the original five hired in the company. One of his jobs was working in the fiberglass department. This knowledge allowed him, in his free time, to design and build a topper for his pickup, cabs for his riding lawn mowers, and a kayak-like boat for duck hunting. He finished his 38 year career as the model shop supervisor. Don and Dorothy lived in rural Kasson, where they raised 4 children: Jerry, Ron, Connie and Donna. Don raised horses as a hobby. His children and their friends enjoyed caring for them and riding in the summer months.
Don enjoyed many outdoor activities including his two favorites, hunting and fishing. A friend from the dairy told him about Bowstring. This led him “Up North” for seasonal trips to catch fish and hunt whitetail deer for close to 70 years. Upon retirement Don and Dorothy moved to northern Minnesota to make their retirement home on Little Jessie Lake. On their hobby farm, Don and Dorothy raised and processed raspberries for 30 years. They enjoyed the many relationships created with their customers and neighbors.
His winter hobbies included his love of woodworking in his shop. He created many memorable and artistic pieces for family and friends.
Later in life, Don thoroughly enjoyed his many trips to Alaska to fish on the Kenai River with his cousin George Boyum. He also had trips with other family members and new friends to fish for halibut, as well as salmon.
Family was always first and foremost with Don and Dorothy. They provided support and enjoyed special times during holidays, birthdays, weddings and the birth of many grandchildren.
Don is survived by his daughter-in-law, Sharon (Jerry) Boyum of Rochester; son, Ron (Barb Hum) Boyum of Minnetonka; daughters, Connie Boyum-Erzar (Jim) of Grand Rapids, Donna (Ralph) Schafer, of Eldorado, Texas. 10 Grandchildren: Becky (Rick) Roeder of Star, Idaho; Penny Boyum (Brett Borgstrom) of Rochester, Garrett (Katie) Boyum, Sabreena Boyum, Tyler (Jessica) Erzar, Maija Erzar, John and Katie Rigdon, Kristi (Nate) Anderson and Matt (Jill) Erzar. 7 Great-Grandchildren; Kali (Jared) Blacker and Cody Roeder, and Alex (Shay) Blockhus, Eli and Ava Erzar, Elise and Audrey Anderson. 3 Great-great grandchildren Bryson, Jace and Kyzer Blockhus.
