Byron native earns full ride to NDSU
Ever since Byron senior Kelsey Engebose was a sophomore in high school, she knew that she wanted to go into a math field one day.
That's why it’s so fitting that she will be going to North Dakota State University on a full ride next year for that, after receiving a very selective Harry D. McGovern scholarship. The full tuition scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman who intend to major in the field of science, technology, engineering, or math.
Engebose first decided she wanted to use her passion for math, to pursue a career, after she learned about all the different opportunities, while taking Algebra 2 as a sophomore.
“I never knew that how many opportunities were available for math related majors in the business world where I ultimately want to be until I began researching and exposing myself to opportunities related to the field. All of my experiences ultimately contributed to me deciding to use my mathematical talents towards a career,” Engebose said.
Engebose explained that her favorite part about math is how straightforward it is, something that she enjoys a lot.
“My favorite part about math is that it is very black and white, you are either right or you are wrong, which makes it very easy for my mind to grasp,” Engebose said. “There is also something so satisfying about solving a math problem correctly, whether it takes two minutes or two hours, it’s easily one of the best feelings,” she added.
While she is still considering what she wants to do for a career, for now she wants to go into the field of actuarial science.
“As of right now, I want to go into the actuarial science field, but I’m also looking at other math related fields as well, such as data science and financial mathematics,” Engebose said. “My ultimate goal would be to work in a high-ranking position at a Fortune 500 company,”
During her time at Byron High School, Engebose was involved in varsity soccer, varsity golf, Link Crew, Grand March Committee, Student Council, band, choir, FCCLA, and SADD.
Engebose graduated in January from Byron High School and will officially be receiving her diploma with her classmates in June.
