Unbeaten Huskies kill JM 54-7

It was yet another breeze for the Owatonna Huskies in their final game of the regular season Oct. 16 as they killed Rochester John Marshall 54-7.

With the victory, the defending state champion Huskies pushed their winning streak to 27 games over the past three seasons, including unbeaten seasons in the past two.

The contest got off to a rather slow start for Owatonna as John Marshall scored the first touchdown of the game putting JM on top for the only time in the game 7-0. The Huskies quickly shot back to score a touchdown and extra point about a minute later to tie the game. Owatonna added a field goal with about a minute to go in the first quarter to take the lead for good 10-7.

In the second quarter, the Huskies piled on four touchdowns and a field goal to take a 40-7 lead at half. One of the highlights in the second quarter was Peyton Beyer’s 30-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Owatonna added two more touchdowns in the second half, one coming midway through the third quarter and the other late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Brayden Truelson dominated Owatonna’s offensive power with 186 passing yards and two touchdowns. Other Huskies to score touchdowns in the game were Sol Havelka, Logan Gauthier, Tanner Hall, Matt Williams, Payton Beyer and Brandon Skala. Owatonna had a total of 347 yards in the game.

Hall led the Huskies with 86 rushing yards while Ethan Walter had 110 receiving yards in the game.

Four defensive players for the Huskies finished the night with six tackles each. They were Grant Achterkirch, Carson Dekam, Matt Seykora and Isaac Gefre. Cole Earles chipped in with three tackles while numerous other Huskies had one tackle each. Seykora recorded the game’s only sack for Owatonna.

The Huskies (8-0) had a first round bye in the section playoffs, which got underway Tuesday night. Owatonna will host the winner of Tuesday’s game between Northfield and Rochester John Marshall Saturday at 7 p.m. The Huskies easily defeated both teams in the regular season.
