Cobras fall flat against Panthers
Facing the 1-4 Pine Island Panthers, the 3-2 Triton Cobras were hoping to return to their winning ways after losing to St. Charles the previous week.
However, the Panthers had other plans as they used an aggressive defense and an explosive offensive to beat Triton 28-7 on Friday, Oct. 4.
Triton Head Coach Mike Ellingson said his team’s offense didn’t get off to the start they wanted.
“I thought we were a little flat and had hoped to jump out with some big explosive plays on offense,” he said.
On top of his offense not playing up to par, the Cobras’ defense also struggled.
“Our defense struggled against the pass allowing 315 yards passing, giving up big plays on back-to-back offensive possessions is a momentum killer,” he said,
Triton’s lone bright spot was Austin Melder’s touchdown run.
Ellingson mentioned that this game should be a good learning experience for the Cobras.
“I hope we learned that we on any given night a team can beat you. Pine Island came out as the more aggressive team and consistently bottled up our offensive running game,” he said.
He said his team will work on aggression, speed, assignment and alignment football in practice this week to prepare for the Plainview-Elgin-Millville (P-E-M) Bulldogs.
The Cobras host the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
