3 teams snag section titles

For high school sports fans, it doesn’t really get any better than what has happened to area teams this past week.

Excitement is at an all-time high this week in Steele County as three schools are celebrating section championships.

Both gridiron powerhouses, the Blooming Prairie Blossoms and Owatonna Huskies, kept their unbeaten records alive by capturing section titles Friday night in their respective divisions. And the Medford Tigers snagged their second straight volleyball section title.

The Awesome Blossoms smoked Goodhue 59-12 to claim the Section 1 championship in Class 1A. It will be a battle of the unbeaten Saturday as Blooming Prairie opens up the state tournament against Springfield-Comfrey. Both have 10-0 records.  The two teams will play Saturday at 12 p.m. in Janesville.

The state defending champion Huskies walked all over Rochester Century 43-6 Friday night to capture the Class 5A Section 1 title. It is the fourth consecutive section championship for Owatonna. The Huskies now face St. Thomas Academy Saturday at 12 p.m. at Woodbury High School in the state quarterfinals.

In volleyball action, Medford qualified for state quarterfinals after defeating Mabel-Canton 3-2 for the section title Saturday in Rochester. The Tigers are ranked third and will now play Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
