BP rolls over Goodhue to capture section title

Goodhue, one of the Awesome Blossoms’ staunchest rivals over the last dozen years proved no match for BP this season. The Blossoms defeated the Wildcats 59-12 at Dodge Center Friday, Nov. 1, to earn their second straight Section 1A championship.  The victory kept the locals undefeated and marked No. 10 in a row.

BP took a 10-point lead in the first quarter, but then exploded for 35 second quarter points for their usual halftime lead, and then let the defense do its part to hold down the Wildcats. A 30-yard field goal from Colin Jordison in the initial period gave the  Blossoms impetus for the second quarter onslaught.

When final statistics are released at season’s end, quarterback Kaden Thomas will join a lengthening list of exceptional quarterbacks who have directed Blossom fortunes for the past dozen years. In the 10 game winning streak, Thomas has tossed the ball around for touchdowns from all spots on the field.  Just last game he threw for 8 TDs, so it was a little surprising that in the win over Goodhue, he limited the offense to four touchdowns, and let the ground game lead the way. And lead the way they did.

Running back Matthew Pryor had a career game, piling up 221 yards on 27 carries. Tyler Archer and Bradley Simon added 60 yards, and the three of them scored four touchdowns. Thomas went an economical 10 of 13 attempts for 84 yards and four touchdowns. Gabe Hagen caught five passes for 18 yards and two scores, Karson Vigeland caught two passes, Alec Baldwin went 2 of 2 for 24 yards, and Mitch Fiebiger caught one pass for 10 yards.  Besides his field goal, Jordison kicked all eight extra points after touchdowns.

Goodhue scored twice in the second quarter, but the BP defense had control for most of the game. Goodhue managed only 198 yards of total offense, 131 rushing and 67 passing.

Fiebiger led the defense with six tackles, and Jarrett Larson added five. Coach Chad Gimbel credited the whole team for the defensive effort.
