Blossom boys end as champions of Section 1A
There were some bittersweet moments for the 2019-20 edition of the Blooming Prairie High School boys basketball team.
The Awesome Blos- soms finished 25-3 on the season, the most wins ever totaled by a Blooming Prairie boys basketball team. That’s the sweet.
The Blossoms won a trip to the Class A State Boys Basketball Tour- nament. The Blossoms did not get to go to state because of the onslaught of the coronavirus. That’s the bitter.
The Blossoms finished the season with a 59-51 victory over Hayfield to win the Section 1A champion- ship in a hard fought game at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.
It was likely that the Blossoms would have played Henning sometime during the state Class 1A tournament.
It is ironic that this matchup was possible because Blooming Prairie played Henning in the state tournament 54 years ago in 1966, the last time a Blooming Prairie team had played in the state tourney.
Coach Nate Piller said the Blossoms “were well balanced” all season.
He called forward Gabe Hagen and guard Kaden Thomas his meat and potato guys. “The others filled out the meal ticket as nice sides,” Piller said.
Senior Gabe Hagen was a leader on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. He had a scoring average of 15.3 points per game and hauled in an average of 7.8 rebounds a game. He notched an aver- age of 4.5 assists per game.
Hagen found ways to score all season despite being double-teamed most of the season.
