Back at state for Medford netters
After earning second place in the Class A state tournament last year, the Medford Tigers will have an opportunity to do even better this year as they defeated Kenyon-Wanamingo (K-W) and Mabel-Canton (M-C) to advance to win the section championship.
In the sub-section championship, the Tigers got off to a strong start against K-W by winning the first set 25-17 and the second set 25-19.
Medford’s momentum carried most of the way through the third set, culminating in a 23-18 lead, just two points away from winning the match.
However, that’s when the K-W Knights rallied to win the third set 26-24.
The Knights kept their momentum going by winning the fourth set.
After losing the last two sets, Medford found just enough energy to win the fifth set 17-15 and advance to the section 1A west volleyball title match.
In the section championship, Medford played M-C for section title for the second straight year.
Like their subsection win over Kenyon-Wanamingo, the Tigers got off to a fast start as they won set one 25-14.
Set two was more competitive, but Medford prevailed 25-23.
However, like Thursday, Medford’s opponent came storming back.
Mabel-Canton stayed alive by winning the third set 25-19 and forced a deciding fifth set by winning the fourth set 25-20.
In the fifth set, it was the Tigers who once again came alive when they needed it the most. Senior Alyvia Johnson had five of her 13 kills in the fifth set to lift the Tigers to a 15-12 win.
Medford is the third seed in the state tournament and will play Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
