Send them all to state

Triton Business Professions of America (BPA) sent 17 students to its Regional Competition, and they will send all 18 on to the State Competition after a successful day of competition.

The Regional Competition was held Jan. 9 at Rochester Community and Technical College. Triton’s students competed in different events against roughly 200 other students from Rochester Century, Rochester Mayo, Rochester John Marshall, Stewartville, Tri-City United, Blue Earth, Waseca, and Lake City high schools.

“Triton BPA has a long-standing tradition of excellence, and Wednesday’s competition proved no different,” said BPA Advisor Rebecca Goossens. “I don’t know that there are many schools out there that get to say, ‘send them all to state!”

Students competed individually and in teams by demonstrating their skills and abilities through tests or projects in a variety of areas including accounting, computer applications, graphic design, video editing, web design, office administration, information technology, human resources, and public speaking. Local business owners and community members with real-life experience judged the contest events. The top five individuals and top two teams from each event earned trips to the State BPA Competition.

“My favorite part about BPA is, and will always be, the fact that it truly prepares our kids for the real world and the real workplace,” said Goossens.  “I love that they get to learn and develop these skills, and I love it even more when they get to see their drive and dedication pay off by doing so well in their competitions.”

The State BPA Contest will be March 7-9 in Minneapolis against roughly 2,000 other students from schools across the state of Minnesota.
