BP Elementary third graders salute America
Third graders at Blooming Prairie Elementary School respectfully saluted America on a recent school day just before Memorial Day.
Forty-three third graders of teachers Angie Avery, Becky Johnson and Chelsea Van Roeckel welcomed members of American Legion Post 52, VFW Post 878 and their auxiliaries who came with a mission.
The mission was to distribute some awards for a patriotic coloring contest and also to give the third graders a lesson on flag etiquette and a history lesson on the Pledge of Allegiance.
"Freedom is not free and our veterans paid the highest price of all to protect our freedoms," said Marilyn Witzel of the Legion and VFW auxiliaries. She is a former teacher who expertly used her teaching skills to talk patriotism with the third graders and their teachers.
Principal Chris Staloch stood in a corner of the third grade classroom, observing the trip in patriotism.
Assisting Witzel with the history lessons were Gerry Berg, chair of the Americanism committee of the auxiliaries; Marilyn Meshke, Legion and VFW auxiliaries and Joyce Johns, president of the VFW Auxiliary and member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Rulers, small flags, patriotic bookmarks and presidential rulers were given to all third graders.
Past VFW Post 878 Commander Joe Wacek and Legion/VFW member Ken Trom put on a demonstration of how to fold the American flag before it is given to a family in honor of their departed loved one who serviced in the military.
Witzel read a flag poem and outlined the history of flying the flag. She said the flag is flown at half staff until noon on Memorial Day and then raised to full staff.
Witzel also presented historical information on the Pledge of Allegiance. She then led the classroom in the Pledge.
A highlight of the visit from the military organizations was the presentation of awards to students who participated in the 2018 Coloring Contest.
Bella Schiller earned a first place award. Ellie Harthan was second and Neila Nelson was third.
