Area group provides needy children with school supplies
Hundreds of area children are set for school next week with brand new supplies in hand thanks to the generosity of an area organization.
Ready, Set, Learn of Dodge County has outfitted 301 children in 137 families with school supplies, according to Tanya Young, coordinator of the organization. The supplies, along with back packs, were distributed Aug. 13 and 14 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kasson.
Young said there were many happy faces on children as well as parents after they were given the supplies. “I saw parents not stressed and to see that on parents’ faces brings me internal joy,” she said.
Last year RSL served 258 children. The group has had as many as 350 in the past.
This year’s totals show there is a greater need in the county for helping needy children. Often times Young sees families who have lost a job or have experienced a change in family dynamics, including divorce. It can be a financial burden for those families to purchase school supplies for their children, she said.
Young found many new families who took advantage of the program this year were not previously aware of it. “A lot of people didn’t know it existed,” she said.
The supplies came from donations from area businesses and people. RSL also held a Stuff the Bus event in July at Shopko in Kasson where shoppers were able to make donations.
“We thank everyone for their support of donating school supplies or financially,” Young said. “We couldn’t have done it without all of you. We are so grateful that we are part of such a generous community.”
While the largest amount of work in complete for RSL, Young reminds families that supplies are available throughout the year for those who need them. Anyone who needs help may contact Young at 316-390-5368 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Anyone receiving services from MN Prairie, SEMCAC or any other social service agency qualifies for the program.
