West Concord business offers natural, organic products for body, home
For Abbi La Rock, the idea of cleanliness and an eco-friendly lifestyle go hand-in-hand.
The West Concord woman is the owner of Abigailia’s Clean Thumb, a business she has run out of her West Concord home for the past several years offering natural, organic soaps and body lotions as well as cleaning supplies and services.
There are two aspects to her business, she explained.
She makes handmade soaps and body lotions but also does residential and commercial housecleaning, again using natural and organic products.
“I was in the medical field for 11 or 12 years,” she said. While it was a wonderful experience, she came to feel it was “not for me” and began thinking of other options.
La Rock said she already had an interest in, and knowledge of, using natural products, liked making things and felt this type of business would be a good fit for her.
Many of the natural, organic ingredients she uses in her products come from her own West Concord garden, she said. She has also begun to get involved in foraging for herbs, she said.
The Wisconsin native said she is used to having her own “treasure trove” of herbs growing wild on her property and infusing them into soaps.
“My whole thing is not to waste anything,” she said explaining how she canned the produce from her garden and carried that a step further in using these things in new ways such as a tomato or a strawberry soap.
“I’m always learning,” she said.
Last year, she said, she had lots of beets and figured out a way to boil them down and made beet soap.
Making the soaps can be a time-consuming project, she said. They may take several hours to make but then they have to sit for several weeks before they can be used.
She carries the same natural, organic philosophy into her cleaning business.
Many cleaning products can be toxic, she said. In addition, the products she uses work just as well and in many ways better than the store-bought variety and they also smell better, she said.
All of her products are safe for people, pets and the environment. For people like her husband who have sensitive skin, her products are a better choice than many commercial brands, she said.
The second aspect of her business is doing housecleaning and here her goal is also to use safe, organic products.
This business is also going well, she said. She has had a high school students working with her to make the soaps and she would now like to find someone to help with the housecleaning side of the business.
To sell her body soaps and lotions she has had her products on display at several summer festivals in the area, most recently Marigold Days in Mantorville, and also has a Facebook page
Her motto is Green Cleaning for the Home and Body. She offers customizable housekeeping services for the home and office as well as organic beauty and cleaning supplies.
