Snow does stop annual annual 5K Fun Run Walk Stroll

When Kasson-Mantorville Community Education Director Jenny Carrier, scheduled the sixth annual 5K Fun Run Walk Stroll she didn’t expect that there would be any snow.

That wasn’t the case over the weekend however, as a brief winter storm made its way to Dodge County.

Despite the poor weather, Carrier said they had a great turnout and they  were able to bring in $3,000 which is short just $100 from last year’s event.

The event is sponsored by the K-M Early Childhood Initiative which was established in 2013.  K-M Community Education developed an early childhood coalition made up of individuals representing many sectors of our community.  This committee focuses on projects to help support children five and under and their families.

Some of the different projects that they held fund include the annual 5K, Community Book Shelves and Book Houses, 1,000 Books before Kindergarten, Early Childhood Transportation Scholarships, Kindergarten Readiness Checklist, Community Educator Based Nights, K-M Baby Clinic and Chamber Speakers and Special Events.

Carrier said that each year they are amazed by the amazing turnouts, which averages over 200 people per year.

Each year we are amazed at the turnout for this event, rain or shine.  We average just over 200 people each year ages 0-senior citizens. The number of sponsors, donations and volunteers committed to making this event happen shows how dedicated community members are to supporting early childhood needs and education in our communities,” Carrier said. “We were very nervous with the weather forecast that people weren't going to be able to come, but we had about 125 people attend, 21 of which ran the 5K outside while the others ran or walked the halls of KMES. This was awesome. It just makes the event so much better,” she added.

Aside from the 5K the event also offers plenty of activities for families.

Carrier said that they are very thankful for the different sponsors of the annual event which includes, You Knead Therapy, Minnesota WiFi, Kasson Dental Clinic, KMTelecom, Scheels, Terro Loco, Kasson Headstart, Counselor Realty - Josh O'Malley Counselor Realty - Kristopher Johnson, Bremer Bank, Citizens State Bank - Hayfield, Hardware Hank, Culligan, HIP - Home Improvement Professionals, and K-M Community Fitness Center.
