K-M to perform “Legend of Sleepy Hallow”
It’s a story that many people are familiar with. The Washington Irving story of schoolteacher Ichabod Crane, Katrina, Brom Bones and the townspeople and children of the haunted New England town of Sleepy Hollow.
The Kasson-Mantorville Drama Department will be presenting the one-act version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” as its entry in the upcoming One-Act Play competition.
The rules for the One-Act competition are strict, said Director Melissa Ferris. Performances have to be kept to 35 minutes or less; if the performance goes over that time the play is disqualified. Set-up for the play can take no more than 10 minutes. There are also limits on how many members of the cast and crew are permitted.
At a rehearsal of the play last week the time was still running a bit more than 35 minutes, and Ferris was telling the cast they needed to speed it up to stay under the 35 minute time limit.
Interest in the One-Act play competition was high when it was announced, Ferris said. Auditions were held in early December and enough students auditioned that she could have cast three plays, she said.
This year’s cast, Ferris said, has a good mix of students who have been in the One-Act before and those who are first-timers.
“The play focuses on actor movement and you have to depend on each other,” said Hannah Brumfield, who is a veteran of Kasson-Mantorville productions.
There will be two public performances of the play, at 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23. These performances will also include performances of the Byron High School One-Act Play, she said.
Kasson-Mantorville will be hosting the subsection competition tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 24.
The performances start at 3:30 p.m., Ferris said, with Kasson-Mantorville tentatively scheduled to take the stage at about 6:15 p.m.
Other schools participating will be Byron, Albert Lea, Winona and Mayo. The top two schools will go on to the Section competition at Lakeville South on Saturday, Feb. 1
“It’s an extremely competitive subsection,” Ferris said. In hosting the event, she said, Kasson-Mantorville does everything possible to make the set-up fair for all the participating schools.
The cast for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” includes Dane Holmes as Ichabod Crane, Ashley Johnson as Katrina, Carson Abbott as Brom Bones.
