Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Steele County Sheriff’s Office survey the wreckage of a single-engine plane Friday morning in a farm field just north of Beaver Lake near Ellendale. The plane crashed Thursday night while flying from Duluth to Winona. The pilot, Daniel Bass, 39, of Winona is expected to make a full recovery after being seriously injured in the crash.
“He beat the odds for sure.” That’s how a plane crash survivor’s wife described the harrowing experience her husband went through Feb. 2 when his plane crashed into a Steele County farm field.  Deanna Bass of Winona was counting her blessings from a hospital room at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester...
I can’t begin to imagine the pain and horror Patty and Jerry Wetterling have experienced over the 28 years. It’s almost incomprehensible.  On Friday during the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s annual convention, I had the opportunity to hear the Wetterlings speak about the tragedy that has gripped...

A local attorney has been named the state’s newest district court judge. Gov. Mark Dayton has chosen Carol Hanks of Waseca as the new judge for Waseca County, replacing the Honorable Larry Collins, who retired last year. Hanks is a shareholder at Patton, Hoversten & Berg, where she handles...
Bird observers got a surprise during the annual bird count in Steele County when they spotted a Short-eared Owl in a marshy area about one mile north of Rice Lake State Park right before sunset. It is quite unusual for these owls to be in this area, according to local bird expert Darryl Hill.
It may have been less than desirable outside back in mid-December, but that didn’t stop area bird enthusiasts from counting the feathery creatures that adorn back yards and other places throughout the year. On Dec. 17, local birdwatchers counted 4,025 feathered friends during the 45th...
It was a night of new appointments during the first Kasson City Council meeting of the year, and the first meeting for new mayor, Chris McKern. Most of the meeting held Wednesday evening, Jan. 11, consisted of routine, if perhaps heavily discussed, agenda items, but it was the council’s...

Cold weather can be a majestic sight to see. However, that majestic look can often blind onlookers of the destruction that can be conducted. Employees of the Steele County Courthouse had a first-hand altercation with that devastation Tuesday.  A pipe burst on the third floor of the county...

Steele County Sheriff’s posse member Mary Delzer (left) and her Arabian horse partner, Desi, took part in search and rescue training exercise outside of Medford in October.
It was a Christmas present Mary Delzer never envisioned getting.  Her companion of nearly 20 years died in a pool of blood on the day after Christmas, leaving the Steele County Sheriff’s posse member emotionally distraught and without a horse that had faithfully served three counties over the past...
