When Jerry and Jane Struthers moved into their home along Mantorville Avenue almost 50 years ago, the street outside their Kasson house was a gravel road.  Much has changed over that time as it has become the busiest road in Kasson next to U.S. Highway 14. The Struthers are facing yet another...
The Dodge County woman accused of murdering a woman in Florida completed the court-ordered printing in court Wednesday morning. Lois Riess, 56, of Blooming Prairie, had her finger, palm and foot prints rolled in court following a court order requiring her to do so last week.  At the hearing...
A 7-year-old boy drowned in a pond in rural Dodge County Tuesday night. Sheriff Scott Rose said the name of the boy is being withheld pending notification of family. Emergency crews responded to Naylor’s Pond on 160thAvenue north of Highway 14 around 4:18 p.m. Tuesday. The sheriff’s office received...
When Kasson police chief Kent Berghuis became aware of the allegations of sexual misconduct against one of his officers, he knew it was going to be a black eye on the agency.  Having an officer accused of a crime, especially sexual abuse, is the worst nightmare for any law enforcement official. It’...
Don’t ever be fooled into thinking things are status quo at the state’s oldest county fair. When the Dodge County Free Fair opens its gates next week in Kasson, there will be new adventures awaiting fairgoers. The fair, which is in its 161styear, runs July 18-22. Perhaps the greatest adventure that...
John Moenning appears to have a strong connection with man’s best friend as the two prepare for the 4-H Dog Show, which was held Saturday. Moenning is a member of the Eden Progressive Gophers 4-H Club.
While most 4-H’ers will be showing their animals at the county fair next week, the dog project has already finished its competition.  Members in the dog project had their judging this past Saturday. One night earlier in the week they were busy preparing on the Dodge County Fairgrounds for their dog...
The Kasson Legion has some new landscaping outside its clubroom along Main Street—a huge 9-foot boulder. The rock will be turned into a patriotic Freedom Rock over the next two weeks with the help of Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II of Greenfield, Iowa. Shown with the rock are (from left) Dave Wilcox, who came up with the idea and legion members Christy Eischens, Blair Kleeberger, Bob Melin and Dale Wellik.
Spreading patriotism around Kasson has come in many forms over the years, but perhaps not in as unusual of a way as what the Kasson Legion is currently embarking on. The Freedom Rock—a 9-foot boulder—has been placed outside the Legion clubroom on Main Street awaiting an artist from Iowa to paint a...

From cashiers to pizza makers to people manning the hot ovens and serving the freshly fired pizzas, volunteers are needed to serve as...
As a special attraction during Saturday’s Draft Horse Pull, Bruce Ebnet of West Concord showed spectators how his team of mini-horses can pull about 1,400 pounds. A little later in the show Ebnet jumped on the pull with his full body, and the minis pulled him after a little trying.
Visitors to Mantorville’s Stagecoach Days got an extra bonus Saturday afternoon when a pair of mini-horses showed up for a surprise visit.  Bruce Ebnet of West Concord dazzled spectators with his mini-horses in between the draft horse pull. The mini-horses weren’t actually a part of the competition...
