Where in the World is History Taking Us?
Are we witnessing history in the making? Or are we witnessing a disaster about to strike? Who can say?
History is a complicated story. How many of you remember history class in school? What was your favorite part of history to study?
I remember being overwhelmed by all the different dynasties, wars, revolutions, names and dates. I could keep track for a little while, then pretty soon I lost a grip on what happened in history. I couldn’t make sense of the story as well as the textbooks could.
Psalm 89 is one of those places in the Bible that teaches us how to make sense of history. What is the main story of history? David’s kingdom, and the descendants of his kingdom. Figure this out, and I promise you, you can figure out the story of the whole world. You can even tell the future, generally, if you understand the throne of David. That’s where God’s hand is working; that’s where God’s strength is located, and that’s what will move from history into the present and into the future. “I will establish his offspring forever, and his throne as the days of the heavens.”
When the angel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary, he said, “You will conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. ... The Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
When people don’t know that THIS is the main story of history, they assume other things are the main story. Think about Nazi Germany -- they were pretty sure THEIR throne would never end. Think about the Soviet Union -- they were pretty sure THEIR throne would never end. The results were catastrophic. The United States, too, will not last forever, because it’s not the throne of David, and it’s not the center of the world.
BUT, you ARE a citizen of David’s kingdom! You are a member of Christ, who reigns on the throne forever and ever. Trust in Him -- not in yourself, or your own good behavior. Not in strongmen, or in resistance movements. Trust in Jesus Christ, for in Him there is abundant mercy. If you rely on Him, you’ll be on track to be a part of history also.
