A Dodge Center man is in custody after gunfire prompted Triton Public Schools to go into a lockdown situation beginning about 11:15 a.m. Thursday morning. According to Dodge County Sheriff Jim Jensen, reports that a man with a gun was acting strangely in Dodge Center and firing a rifle repeatedly initiated heavy response from Dodge County Sherriff's deputies and the Minnesota State Patrol. Law enforcement officials set up a perimeter around the man's home and began evacuating residents while they dealt with the situation. A Minnesota State Patrol negotiator was called to the scene, however Jensen stated he was acquainted with the suspect and was able to get the individual to surrender. The approximately two-hour standoff ended when the man exited his house and placed the rifle down before being taken into custody. The individual, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to Rochester to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to Jensen. It's unknown at this time how many shots were fired. Triton Public School officials notified parents of the precautionary lockdown. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 1:15 p.m. Law enforcement personnel were still investigating the scene as of this report. A press release from the Dodge County Sheriff's department is expected by tomorrow.
